Thanksgiving Traditions Look Different this Year but are Still Being Celebrated

Thanksgiving is an incredible holiday where all family members gather together and spend time while sharing a meal and doing fun activities. The Coronavirus has been affecting most events, but it has especially been hard during the holiday season. This year’s Thanksgiving is going to be different than last, but will still be a happy day. Skyline students have unique ways with their families to show how they are thankful.

Students have fun traditions to bond with their family after a full meal together. Thanksgiving is a holiday where extended families can come together, especially since most do not live with each other. Karlee Wilson has mentioned different activities that she does with her immediate and extended family that live in the area.

“We all get together with my cousins and watch a movie after the dinner,” Wilson said.

Other people in the Skyline community have not so traditional meals but still, celebrate the holiday in their own personal way. Richa Mehta mentioned that her family does themes every year. Changing how Thanksgiving looks every year is a good way to look forward to next year.

“This year’s theme was Mexican,” said Mehta. “We don’t like turkey that much, and not everyone eats meat.”

Another activity that families do after dinner is play different kinds of board games. This activity is a way to bond with everybody while showing each person’s competitive side. Most traditions are not just about what they are eating at dinner, but activities that all members can be involved in.

“We play games like Uno and Guessture,” said Mehta. “Then we watch a movie at the end of the night.”

The Coronavirus has limited the capacity of people that can join the holidays, but it has also been a way for immediate family to grow closer. Thanksgiving is also a time where people can take a much-needed break, whether it is from school or work. The busy season can be put on pause while families can take time to do their annual traditions and relax.

Some families are doing video calls, so they can give thanks to the people that were not able to join them this year. Having a positive view of the holidays is the key to turning this not so a wonderful year into a marvelous experience to remember.
