As Seattle’s most popular sports team, the Seahawks have all eyes on them this 2024-25 NFL season. The ‘hawks gave fans plenty to cheer for in the first three games of the year, starting out with three consecutive wins. Quickly, fans were brought back down to earth when the team lost the next three games over the span of 10 days. With a deflating 3-3 record prior to week 7, what happened to the undefeated Seahawks?
Seattle’s defensive struggles are a very big part of their losing streak; in weeks four through six, they gave up 107 points. On Monday night in week 4 the Seahawks played the Detroit Lions. Lions quarterback Jared Goff went 18/18 passing for 292 yards and threw two touchdowns. Putting up 42 points against the Seahawks’ 29, the Lions dominated offensively.
This trend continued in Week 5 when the New York Giants’ quarterback, Daniel Jones, passed for 257 yards and two touchdowns, handing the Seahawks another loss. On Thursday night, the San Francisco 49ers came to Seattle and continued the trend, winning 36-24. 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw for 255 yards and three touchdowns in the prime-time game, giving the Seahawks their third loss in a row.
The losing streak can’t be entirely blamed on the defense. The offense in Seattle is more to blame. The Seahawks’ offensive turnovers play a prominent part in the losses. In the game against the Detroit Lions, wide receiver DK Metcalf fumbled late in the first quarter, followed by an interception thrown by quarterback Geno Smith in the fourth quarter. A few days later against the Giants, Metcalf lost the ball again early in the second half. The following Monday night, Geno Smith threw two interceptions, one on the first drive of the game and one in the fourth quarter.
These turnovers are a result of the Seahawks being down late in the game, requiring them to throw the ball rather than rely on the run game. If the team can manage to stay within one possession of their opponent’s score, they can depend heavier on their talented running back. Running back Kenneth Walker III ran in three touchdowns against Detroit and is proving himself week after week, tied for the third most rushing touchdowns through week seven.
Overall, the Seahawks have shown their resilience year after year and there are plenty of games left to play before the playoffs. Seattle is currently in third place in the NFC West and has a few division rivalry games coming up soon. Following their recent 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills in week eight, the Seahawks are playing to get back into the win column this week with the Los Angeles Rams coming to town on November 3.
