On October 28, 2024, Tyler, the Creator, songwriter and producer, released his eighth studio album “Chromakopia” from Columbia Records. According to NPR, all 14 tracks on the album landed on the Billboard Hot 100.
The topics covered on the album range from the transition from child to adult, parental relationships, to the struggle of finding your identity; all can appeal to both younger and older audiences. Claire Jones, a Sophomore at Skyline High School listened to the album and remarked, “I enjoy listening to Tyler, the Creator because the beats and rhythm in his music is super unique and something that I haven’t seen a lot of artists do recently!” Along with sticking out among countless musicians, Tyler, the Creator communicates vulnerability and raw emotions in his music, which can feel like a breath of fresh air and can be considered one of the keys to “Chromakopia’s” commercial success.
Songs and albums can be years in the making in order for the artist to feel ready to release their work to the world. Tyler, the Creator is not new to musical success, he has been active in the music industry for over 15 years with numerous albums, several extended plays, and two Grammy awards under his belt. When it comes to composing music, Tyler prefers to start with the foundation, with the beat and melody, continuing to shape his idea for the song, before creating the lyrics at the end, as claimed by Gilda Furgiuele in an article on Tyler’s musical process on Medium.com.
Marlie Little, a Skyline Sophomore who saw Tyler, the Creator perform at a music festival in April 2024, said, “Tyler, the Creator’s performance was crazy and intense, and I was overwhelmed with his energy and the audience’s response to him around me.” Tyler’s music has been known to invoke many emotions, varying from angst to deep love and passion, as seen in his songs “Chroma” and “Darling, I.” Altogether, these elements combine to create a dynamic album and an incredible listening experience.
