The presidential election has dominated the limelight, and rightfully so. However, many local elections also bring significant change. In Washington State, residents voted on a governor and four initiatives.
New Leadership: The Gubernatorial Race
Two candidates emerged after Governor Jay Inslee announced he would not run for re-election: Democrat Bob Ferguson and Republican Dave Reichert.
The State of Washington has generally leaned Democratic; this cycle was no different. Ferguson won by 11% points, gaining 450,000 more votes than Reichert. The key to his victory was populous King County, where he amassed 72% of the vote.
“At the end of the day, as governor, I will protect your rights. I will defend your freedoms. I will change the status quo,” Ferguson said during his debate against Dave Reichert.
He cited public safety and the cost of living, among others, as areas he will reform.
Key Decisions: Statewide Initiates
In the vote for State Initiates, one of the four initiatives on the ballot passed: Initiative Measure No. 2066. Barely passing with 52% of the vote, the initiative repeals measures prohibiting natural gas use. These repealed measures include electrification plans.
However, 62% of voters rejected Initiative Measure No. 2117. This verdict necessitates certain businesses to reduce or pay off their emissions. Blocking this initiative also preserves funding for combating climate change.
Washingtonians similarly rejected Initiative Measure No. 2109, with 64% denying its passage. Its denial maintains an excise tax on certain goods for those who make over $250,000 annually. Most funds from this tax go directly to the education sector.
Initiative Measure No. 2124 pertains to the long-term care insurance program WA Cares. With 55% voting against it, most Washington employees must continue to have 0.58% of their pay deducted to fund the program.
