Whether you like K-pop or not, it’s undeniable the Korean music industry has been dominating the music world with their catchy songs, choreography and breath-taking visuals. Although the idols are the spitting image of the Korean beauty standard with their perfect bodies, flawless skin, and silky hair, the secret to maintaining that figure is much harder than it seems. If the Western beauty standard is considered harsh, the Korean standard is on another level.
Despite the brutal standards, Wonyoung, a member of the K-pop group IVE, has achieved this look. Looking to her for inspiration, her fans want to become better, healthier and fitter versions of themselves. Hence, the aesthetic “Wonyoungism” was named.
Inspired by Wonyoung, the lifestyle look combines a soft and ‘coquette’ aesthetic, attracting millions of fans. As “Wonyoungism” gets more and more popular, things have gotten out of hand. Rather than promoting a healthy lifestyle, “Wonyoungism” promotes unhealthy eating behaviors claiming this to be the best way to achieve the body Wonyoung has. Without knowing better, some “Wonyoungism” followers jump on the trend of only eating a couple pieces of cucumber for a meal or only eating ice cubes with salt and pepper for the day.
Ella Jones, from Dazed Digital, says the majority of fans that engage in “Wonyoungism” are students ranging from 11 to 16 years old, who are still growing and might have not even reached puberty yet. Despite this, they still participate in this trend that is romanticizing eating disorders. Furthermore, many “Wonyoungism” followers create their own diet plan that includes fasting for days and vigorous exercise.
According to Healthline.com, by reducing caloric intake, not only would one’s metabolism slow down but also, the immune system would deplete, and much more. Prolonged dieting can eventually lead to eating disorders, and fear for food that can last for years.
