For their 50th anniversary, the Seattle Sounders soccer team released new jerseys. The new uniforms featured retro colors and designs in combination with the modern rave green color. The website says the new kit honors “the generations of players who paved the way for our sustained legacy of success. Inspired by our history and heritage, this kit pays tribute to our first 50 years and marks the beginning of our next 50.”
The jerseys are meant to reference previous designs and put a modern twist on them to bring them up to date with the current state of the game. The stripes pay tribute to the uniforms from the 1983 season and the light blue coloring with dark green accents reference the 1974 uniforms, while the neon rave green puts a modern twist on the uniforms. The white borders of the jersey also help to complete the retro feel.
Named the Anniversary Kit, the Sounders site states it “encapsulates a half century of history with an eye to the future” and that it “stays true to our guiding principle: that Sounders FC is eternally yours.”
With any rebranding comes opinions. Reese Crossgrove, a season ticket holder, says that she thinks “they are the best jerseys yet out of any of the jerseys they have had!” … “It makes it more exciting and interesting to watch with jerseys that have backstory.” Crossgrove has been a sounders fan for many years and owns a signed version of one of the new jerseys as well as some of the new merchandise for the team.
The Anniversary Kit first debuted back in February 2024. The Seattle Sounders are ranked fourth in their anniversary season, with a record of 16 wins and 9 losses.
