As you may know, the new movie musical “Wicked” has been a massive box office hit and is now the biggest movie adaptation of a Broadway musical.
“Wicked’s” success is a direct reflection of the musically talented actors and the way they stayed true to the original 2003 musical. There is a common theme among move musicals with hiring A-list celebrities to attract more viewers, even if they have no prior musical experience. “Wicked’s” authentic vocals with an extremely talented cast have earned the movie millions of dollars, and many award nominations.
Movie musicals are heavily known to be a hit or miss situation. Movies like “The Greatest Showman” and “In the Heights” have had massive success, but other movies like “Mean Girls” (2024) have flopped. Something that directly impacts a movie musical’s success is the cast’s vocals. The cast of “The Greatest Showman” is very talented, with many having credentials in Broadway musicals, like Hugh Jackman (“The Boys from Oz” and “The Music Man”). Similarly, “Wicked” has an incredibly stacked cast, starring Cynthia Erivo (“The Color Purple,” Tony Winner), Ariana Grande (“Star on Victorious,” Grammy Winner), Jonathan Bailey, and Jeff Goldblum, who are all extremely qualified and talented actors.
When I saw “Wicked,” the talent of the cast made the movie an out-of-body experience, and when I listen to the soundtrack now, it still moves me to tears and gives me goosebumps. Not only did I love it, but the person I went with said “The voices were mesmerizing, moving and gave me an urge to sing along!” Overall, the “Wicked” movie’s success is all thanks to the incredible actors who kept the magic of the original 2003 musical alive.
