In communities across the country, young people are preparing for their futures by developing leadership, business, and entrepreneurial skills. One non-profit CTSO (career and technical student organization) at the forefront of this movement is DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America).
For over 75 years, DECA has been shaping the leaders of tomorrow by providing students with real-world opportunities in business, marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Through classroom experiences, leadership training, and competitive events, DECA helps students build essential skills that benefit both their careers and their communities.
What is DECA?
DECA is an international organization serving over 225,000 high school and college students worldwide, from the U.S. to China. Through local chapters, DECA offers students a platform to learn about business and entrepreneurship while developing leadership abilities. Members gain access to various programs, including business simulations, industry partnerships, and competitive events that test their knowledge and skills in business, preparing them for the future.
Suruchi Dokka, a junior at Skyline and a DECA member for two years, shares, “DECA has given me the opportunity to test my knowledge and skills in areas I never considered before. Through its roleplay events, I discovered my passion for automobiles, something I never thought I would explore or like.”
Why is DECA Important to the Community?
DECA is not just about excelling in business; it’s about developing skills that make students effective leaders, ethical decision-makers, and engaged citizens. The organization encourages young people to think critically, solve problems creatively, and collaborate—all essential qualities for success in today’s interconnected world.
By supporting DECA, communities are investing in the next generation of business leaders who will drive economic growth and social progress. DECA members learn values such as integrity, teamwork, and responsibility—skills that extend beyond the classroom and into all aspects of life.
The DECA Experience: A Pathway to Success
Participating in DECA opens up a world of opportunities. Students gain hands-on experience in areas like marketing strategy, salesmanship, and entrepreneurship through local, regional, state, and international competitions. These events allow students to showcase their talents, compete with peers, and gain valuable feedback from industry professionals.
Beyond competitions, DECA offers leadership development programs, networking opportunities, and community service projects. This combination of academic challenges and real-world experiences builds confidence and prepares students for the next phase of their lives, whether entering the workforce, attending college, or starting their own businesses.
Another Skyline junior, Niharika Kotha, who has been a DECA member for three years, speaks to the organization’s impact. “Being a part of DECA has taught me how to think critically, collaborate with others, and make decisions that matter—not just in business, but in life. It’s giving me the skills I need to truly make a difference in my community.”
In essence, DECA equips students with business skills while fostering personal growth, leadership, and a sense of responsibility. These qualities empower students to make a positive impact on their communities and future careers, ensuring they are well-prepared for success in an ever-evolving world.
