Sparty. The nickname we associate with not only our school mascot but also our school. After all, what could be more Skyline than Sparty themself?
Sparty’s dedication to Skyline school spirit is apparent when witnessing their enthusiasm at assemblies, and their commitment to hyping us up. But when in the presence of Sparty, do you ever wonder what it’s like behind the costume?
At the beginning of the year, a message was sent schoolwide asking for a new Sparty. With the year half-way over and having seen Sparty at countless assemblies, football games and other school events, we asked Sparty what they thought of the job so far.
When asked what encouraged them to take such a unique role, Sparty replied that they thought it would be “fun and enjoyable” and they “enjoy being part of the school spirit.” After all, to be Sparty you have to have the confidence to put yourself out there. Sparty mentions that the suit itself has to do with increased confidence, saying it “feels great to be in the suit, you feel a lot more extroverted and full of energy when it comes to greeting new people.”
While school spirit comprises most of Sparty’s duties, there is a factor that comes with the job that cannot be ignored: secrecy. Throughout the school, only a handful of people know the identity of Sparty, with most staff and students clueless about any details about them. It was this anonymity that interested Sparty, as they would play the character “without any of [their] friends knowing.” Sparty never mentions the topic in front of friends who are unaware, ultimately keeping the secrecy alive. Go, Sparty!
