Ten mass shootings occurred within the first eight days of 2025, leaving many Skyline students to think about safety at school.
Mass shootings are events in which the perpetrator uses a firearm to injure or kill multiple people. These events tend to occur in or near large and population areas including schools.
The deadliest of January 2025 was the New Orleans truck attack. A man inspired by ISIS killed 14 and injured dozens before engaging in a shootout with police on the tourist-filled Bourbon Street.
According to the Department of Homeland Security K-12 Shooting Database, there has been a rapid increase in gunfire on school grounds, peaking in 2021. These horrendous acts hurt the individuals involved as well as our nation as a whole.
According to the Department of Justice, “In an open-source database study, 80% of individuals who carried out a K-12 mass shooting stole the firearm used in the shooting from a family member.” This exposes the need for more secure, out-of-reach firearm storing practices.
A Skyline sophomore stated their worry about the current shooting epidemic in America, “It sucks that we’re not even two weeks into the year and we already have mass shootings. I think there should be stricter punishment for this type of thing.”
Another anonymous student stressed they believed there should be improvements to prevent these horrifying events, “I’m honestly pretty afraid and I think that it is a super big issue.”
As in the past, there is a renewed call for better gun regulation, stricter punishments, and more ways to prevent mass shootings from happening in America. With hope, our school and community will continue to remain safe as we try to keep the dialog open and provide resources and information when needed.
