With unemployment where it is, the onset of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools has only worsened the public’s perception of the job market and future career development opportunities. Is a rise in unemployment an inevitable tragedy or an overblown myth?
Pew Research Center survey data shows that 64% of American adults believe that AI will reduce the number of jobs within the next 20 years, but how much of that is the truth?
With the invention of computers, many protested that the technology would cause widespread unemployment. While some jobs suffered from the increase in electronics, millions of jobs were created in computer science and the tech industries. Experts at McKinsey Global Institute claim the same will be true for AI, causing market growth in tech management, healthcare and educational fields.
This growth stems from the idea that employment will become more skilled in the future, with AI replacing repetitive or entry-level tasks. World Economic Forum analysts express concern over this shift, stating that “the rise of AI-powered tools threaten[s]… white collar, entry-level roles.” While established professionals or those in managerial positions will retain their employment, less experienced workers, looking to get their foot in the job market, will suffer.
Backlash against AI has surfaced, especially among younger adults. Freelance writer Tara Steele remarked, “I have noticed since ChatGPT came out, the demand for freelance work has reduced dramatically.” With entry-levels jobs threatened, employment will grow more and more competitive. This indicates a trend in the job market where AI will disproportionately affect individuals with a low socioeconomic status or those without connections in skilled professions, as those populations typically rely on working in entry-level professions or doing unskilled labor.
The future of artificial intelligence is unknown. However, experts agree that the market is changing, and future workers will need to remain ever vigilant of how AI will factor into their livelihoods.
