The Argosy cruise line, “The Spirit of Seattle,” has officially begun sailing its Christmas ships, seen across the Puget Sound with its twinkling lights and huge decorations. The cruise, along with others in different boat companies, started sailing in late November and will continue giving tours of the Sound until December 23, with 1.5-hour voyages to 40 different Pacific Northwest destinations. These voyages consist of a choir performance, special Santa visits, and a reading of the classic “’Twas the Night Before Christmas”.
Kavya G., a Skyline freshman, said, “The Christmas cruises sound super fun! I hope I can try to go this year!”
This tradition started way back in 1949, when Argosy ships started the Christmas ship festival. It was meant to bring happiness and spirit to the Seattle waterfront communities. Many people can still enjoy the festival, even if they are reluctant to board ships.
Lots of people gather on waterfronts like Alki beach to enjoy the choir’s broadcasted show. Many also decorate their own boats and follow the ships in a parade. As grand as these trailing celebrations have been growing, nothing can top the grand finale.
The festivities begin at 2 pm, but the official show starts at 8 pm. The boat stops at various landmarks, including Lake Union, Portage Bay and Gas Works Park, where a huge bonfire is hosted as people view the show. The cruise line has added Tacoma and Edmonds locations this year as well. As the holiday season is upon us, this is one of the greatest Seattle Christmas activities to experience, for newcomers and Seattle locals alike.
