New Flextime New Opportunities

First introduced in the 2019-2020 school year, the flextime schedule at Skyline helps students with homework during school. The main purpose of this time during the school day is to have students succeed and while using their time wisely. Last year the schedule was canceled due to the pandemic but it has come back this year with in-person learning.

“I was just flooded with school work and had no time to make it up,” said Sushil, a senior student at Skyline High School.

With school being five days a week with seven periods each day at regular high schools, the flextime schedule has helped students immensely in giving them some space to stay on track.

‘I think flextime is very useful as it gives us the opportunity to study for tests and get help from teachers in the classes we are struggling in,” says Sushil. Flextime provides time to talk to teachers and retake tests. This allows students to save time after school to take tests.

“It also helps teachers work with students during the day- allowing staff to get more outreach done during the school day. It is our hope that this allows students and staff to obtain more balance. Hennig constantly says “the more we can get done during the school day- the less we have to do at home” says Ashley Landes, the Assistant Principal at Skyline Highschool.

The schedule has created more balance in a regular work day at the school, having more freedom during the longer periods with teachers as well as students getting more breathing room between classes.

“I wish I had something like this when I was in school, ” Landes explains. “I think it would have cut down on some of my late nights of homework!” The amount of homework that gets stressful during the day creates very long nights for many students. Having this time for the students is very key for educational success.

“ I just sit there and work, but I usually get bored and look at my phone”. It is a waste of time some days,” Nicolas said, a sophomore at the high school.

Many students argue about this too, providing a balance ground for both could be a struggle for the high school.

A student perspective on flextime is very valuable to the success of flextime, this could provide feedback and context on how it could improve for the future.

“Sometimes I feel like the class just fools around the whole time”, Nicolas continues. “I try to focus on homework but I get distracted very easily.”

This may be a problem for some students. The school has created a way to counter this with private study halls as well as student tutoring.

Skyline High School has taken time to study other high schools about using time out of their day to focus on student help and the name flextime was voted by the students in 2019 by a poll.

Flextime was a new schedule added to the high school. The schedule consisted of a block day that included 45 minute sessions to go to different classes. Due to the global pandemic, flextime was canceled and the schedule was changed to fit into a remote learning style.

The high school uses a website called Enriching Students, this helps the student select the classes they will attend on Tuesday or Wednesday at the school during the 45 minute period. The website is new to flextime and was never used in the first iteration of the schedule back in 2019.

The school plans to keep the flextime schedule moving forward due to the positive support of the students and staff.
