This Winter Break May Be the Most Anticipated Yet

With what seems like an endless amount of assignments and tests the weeks beforehand, this winter break may be the most anticipated yet.

After a year and a half of online learning through platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom, many students feel overwhelmed from the workload that comes with in person school and going into higher grade levels.

“Coming back from being completely online…It was easier in some ways because you are comfortable at home and can immediately start your homework. You could wake up later and it just gave us a lot more flexibility” said Mistry.

Students do not have the comfort of their homes anymore, and physically coming to school each day in addition to the increased workload has been a leap and stressor for many.

“It’s just been a lot of assignments and projects on top of college apps and now college decisions are coming out. It’s just been a lot overall and stressful” said Siya Mistry, a senior at Skyline.

“After doing so much homework and having so many tests we just need this time to rest and recharge,” said Kamaile Marcus, a junior at Skyline.

Students are looking towards different ways to get through the weeks before break. One is the holiday spirit, or the positive feeling people experience during holiday periods, present at Skyline.

“I love the holiday season, starting the festivities and themed days was fun. In one of the clubs we did a secret santa. The idea of accomplishing whatever I’m working towards” said Mistry.

In addition to the excitement and joy that comes from the holiday season, students are looking towards family and friends.

“…just being able to rely on them when I’m stressed out or need any help is great” said Marcus.

Most prominently, activities and plans students have for winter break are what is helping them get through. A couple of the most popular activities Skyline students go to during break is Snowflake Lane and the Bellevue Downtown Ice Rink.

Snowflake lane is a nightly 30-minute parade located on the sidewalks between Bellevue Square and Lincoln Square at 7pm. The parade consists of a variety of holiday floats, festive music, toy drummers, dancers, lights, and falling snow.

“It’s really fun for me, especially watching the drummers. I actually plan on trying out for that next year if I have time” said Marcus. “It’s pretty short too so you don’t get bored.”

After eating dinner and watching the parade, going to the Bellevue Ice Rink can be a fun way to end the day.

Bellevue Downtown Ice Rink is a seasonal, outdoor skating arena great for going with family and friends. Rental skates are included in the admission prices, along with on-site commissions.

“It’s kinda surprising how just ice skating in circles can be really fun,” said Marcus.

The stress before winter break is a struggle that is almost unanimous for students and staff. However, family and friends, anticipation for fun plans, and the holiday spirit are what’s helping students get through. Winter break is a time to have fun, relax, and recharge for a new year.
