On December 9, 2025, Skyline’s Associated Student Body (ASB) announced a new dance being hosted on February 7, 2026: Winter Formal. Though students recently learned about it, the event has been considered by ASB for many years. “The real planning began this year, with brief mentions of dates and logistics last spring,” said ASB officer Finley B..
Skyline ASB has hosted only one dance in the past: Homecoming. The event is well-attended, due in part to the up-beat party atmosphere ASB creates in the Skyline commons and gym area. Winter Formal is meant to have a different, though not altogether opposite, tone.
“The event is off-campus at a beautiful ballroom on Lake Sammamish. We have a DJ that will play mostly up-beat music but throw in a couple of slow songs,” said Carissa T., another ASB officer planning the dance. The dress-code is meant to be more formal than Homecoming, said Carissa, mentioning longer dresses and suits “if you so choose.”
Another highlight of the Winter Formal is the free catering. “We will have various sodas, water, and Crumbl cookies,” Carissa added. She noted how this differentiates from Homecoming, where all refreshments cost money.
“The Formal seems like a fun chance to dress up and hang out with friends outside of school,“ said Sophie W., a senior at Skyline. “I doubt I’ll be going because there’s already two dances this year, but I would go in the future if I could.”
ASB hopes the Formal won’t just be a one-year occurrence. “We plan to continue it into upcoming years as something new to bring to Skyline,” said Finley.
Tickets for the Formal are starting significantly cheaper than those for Homecoming. Students with an ASB card can purchase a ticket for $15 online or through the bookkeeper; students without ASB can get a ticket for $20.
As Skyline’s first-ever Winter Formal, the event remains something of a mystery. That’s part of the appeal for students looking for a different experience and atmosphere than Homecoming provides. With a beautiful venue, free food, and cheaper tickets, students curious about a new kind of school dance may find it’s an event worth checking out.
