Secret Santa is a popular holiday gift-exchange game that’s sure to bring smiles to the faces of friends and family. Participants anonymously draw names and give a present to the person they select. During the gift-opening, everyone also tries to guess who their Secret Santa might be, adding an element of fun and mystery. As one Skyline freshman said, “Secret Santa is really only fun because the person who you’re giving the gift to has absolutely no idea that it was your idea.”
Although it is not known who officially started Secret Santa, many say the game is inspired by Larry Dean Stuart, a philanthropist who anonymously gave 100-dollar bills to people in need during holiday season in the 1970s. This gift-giving process earned him the original nickname of “Secret Santa.” Stuart continued this tradition for years, only revealing his true identity in 2006, shortly before his death in 2007. This act of kindness in the spirit of the holidays sparked the game that is popular in many homes today.
To make the most of the experience, it’s helpful to set a spending limit so gifts feel fair and comfortable for everyone. Choosing to purchase a gift that fits the recipient’s personality adds meaning, though a gift card with a receipt is a reliable backup if you’re unsure.
Secret Santa is a cheerful tradition that spreads generosity and humor during the holiday season.
