With over 10,000 titles, the Skyline library is somewhere every student has been to at least once. The library has been run by Ms. Bacon for more than 10 years. She is Skyline’s third librarian. Prior to managing the library, Bacon was a social studies teacher.
Most of the library’s books come from recommendations and requests by students or teachers, but Bacon also adds collections she finds while searching online lists and journals. The most popular title checked out this year was Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. One Skyline student read the book after seeing some fanart on TikTok. The book follows a girl who kills everyone she touches except for two men.
The Skyline Library uses the Dewey Decimal system, which organizes books by categories, with each subsequent number giving a subcategory. This way, even if the book you want is checked out, you can find similar ones in the same area. The King County Library System uses the same system, making browsing books easier.
Teachers often take their classes to visit the library. The busiest times of year are October and March: October because classrooms have had time to settle in, and March because research projects are often due after mid-winter break. Many classrooms also visit the library for Socratic seminars.
When asked if the library is mostly used for finding research or personal books, Bacon said it is roughly equal, but that people who read for fun show up more frequently. For the regulars, the most popular section is fiction, specifically fantasy and realistic fiction.
If you need help finding a source or are simply looking for a good book to read during break, visit the Skyline library.
