With the results of the 2024 presidential election, it’s easy to forget the elections with more local influence, such as the 2024 Washington Senator Class 1 position election and the Washington State District 8 House of Representatives election.
Each state is divided into districts of populations with roughly 750,000. Every two years, an election occurs for each district’s representative. This year, Democrat Kim Schrier ran against Republican Carmen Goers in our State District 8. The candidates had differing views and opinions on education, climate change, and gun control.
After an intense campaign face-off, Schrier managed to win her third re-election, winning about 54% of the votes, while Goers was close behind with around 46% of the votes. Schrier believes in stricter rules on guns, such as background checks and the ban of assault-type weapons. She also supports expanding the Affordable Care Act, as well as advocating for comprehensive immigration reform, such as protections for undocumented immigrants. “I’m particularly worried about accidental overdoses in teens,” Schrier stated, highlighting the dangers of drug trafficking.
The other part of the U.S. Congress is the Senate, made up of two senators from each state. This year, Maria Cantwell and Raul Garcia competed for the Class 1 Senator spot in Washington. It concluded in Cantwell’s victory, making it her fifth term as a Washington State Senator, winning roughly 60% of the votes.
Cantwell is strongly pro-choice and emphasizes overdose prevention via community health. Garcia pushes for tougher penalties on drug traffickers and advocates for affordable healthcare with less regulation.
2024’s Congress elections have reinforced Democratic leadership in Washington, with Kim Schrier retaining her House seat with a focus on stricter gun laws and expanded healthcare, and Maria Cantwell winning another Senate term, emphasizing pro-choice stances and overdose prevention.
