Students and staff have two full weeks of winter break this school year: December 20 to January 4. Some at Skyline plan on traveling, while others decide to stay home.
One Skyline student highlighted the joys of staying home, “excited to catch up on rest and spend time with family and friends during the holiday.”
Similarly, one Skyline teacher who plans on “staying in the area” is looking forward to “spending time together” with his family, “playing games” and “eating great meals”.
Although first semester final exams will start soon after Skyline returns from the holiday, many students are focused on where they are headed instead.
One such student plans to go to Hawaii, excited because he “can focus on things … like travel” rather than school. The student “[loves] to explore the world and many different cultures so [he can have] an educated world view.”
Another Skyline student is also traveling to Hawaii but for a different reason. “[My family and I] need a break from the cold weather,” he said. “I’m pretty excited, as it’ll be … a change and I’ll get to see lots of water and beautiful sunsets.”
A Skyline teacher said that “because [she] is always looking for [her] next trip,” she doesn’t notice much “fluctuation in [travel] interest.”
“Travel is getting … more expensive, but that’s true for everything right now,” she said. “The world right now is a place where it can be hard to find a lot of joy.”
She emphasized how the holidays help her “re-center … and re-focus on what really matters”, which, for her, are family, laughter, playing board games together, and more.
Though the cost of travel has risen, a study done with data using Kayak, the world’s leading traveling search engine, showed a 10% increase in travel interest searches when compared with 2024.
As winter break approaches, semester one finals close in as well. But like much of Skyline is doing, be sure to get some rest or explore new places this holiday season before exams next year.
