On February 28, 2026, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in a joint U.S.-Israel military airstrike. For decades, Khamenei was one of the most powerful political and religious leaders in the world, making his death both surprising and controversial. The news had started both support and outrage inside Iran and internationally.
Khamenei had been Supreme Leader of Iran since 1989, with significant control over the military, government, and national decision-making. His death caused significant uncertainty within Iran’s leadership.
On March 8, Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was appointed as the new Supreme Leader, signaling the continuity in Iran’s political direction despite the recent crisis.

President Donald Trump stated that the objective was to “defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime” and labelled the strikes as self-defense. The operation was also reported to be targeted at senior Iranian officials, including Khamenei, who were at specific locations when bombs and missiles struck.
The Israel Defense Forces reported dropping over 2,000 bombs on Iranian targets, affecting 24 of Iran’s provinces, including military bases, government facilities, and an elementary school. Casualties were estimated at roughly 1,330, including 40 to 165 children and staff at the school, raising the question of whether bombing children in a country across the world is necessary to “defend the American people.”

Despite the U.S. labelling the strikes as self-defense, many are critical of the justification. A freshman at Skyline said, “It doesn’t make sense that anyone can kill the leader of a country… it is wrong to bomb so much area under a weak justification.” This point of view reflects the broader debate about whether targeted killings of heads of state can ever be fully justified under a claim of ‘self-defense.’
The killing of Ali Khamenei has marked one of the most dramatic political events in recent months. The bombings have led many to question whether the U.S. should oversee the assassination of foreign leaders.
